How to Make Perfect Hard-Boiled Eggs in the Instant Pot (5-5-5 Method)

Every person I talk to who’s made hard-boiled eggs in the Instant Pot says they will NEVER make them in a pot of boiling water again. It’s straightforward, easy to remember and they peel as if there’s a layer of air between the shell and egg. There are several methods for pressure cooking eggs but my favorite is the 5-5-5 method. You can cook 1 egg or fill them up the max fill line the time will be the same!

The Process

Start by adding a cup of water to your Instant Pot. Next, add a trivet or steamer basket and your eggs.

Close the lid and PRESSURE COOK for 5 minutes (this is the first 5 in our 5-5-5 sequence). While that’s cooking, fill up a bowl with ice water. When it’s done pressure cooking, do a delayed quick release for 5 minutes (this is the second 5 in our 5-5-5 sequence). After 5 minutes go ahead and release the pressure then put the eggs into the ice bath for 5 minutes (you guessed it, the last 5 in our 5-5-5 sequence).

Now peel them and you’ll see why everyone raves about Instant Pot hard-boiled eggs!

FAQ

How many eggs can I cook in my Instant Pot at once?

You can add as many as you’d like as long as you don’t go past the max fill line. The time will be the same!

Why do you prefer this method instead of “insert other methods here”?

I’ve tried other methods and I always come back to this one for two reasons. First, it’s always been the easiest for me to remember. Can’t get much easier than remembering 5-5-5. Second, I never forget about it and overcook my eggs. With other methods, I tend to forget about it during the natural release portion and my eggs end up grey around the yolk. With the 5-5-5 method, I usually don’t leave my kitchen until they’re in the ice bath since it cooks so fast! This is all personal preference so if you don’t prefer this method, find the one you like the best!

Can I refrigerate hard-boiled eggs?

Yes, you can refrigerate them for up to 7 days.

Can I freeze hard-boiled eggs?

It’s best not to freeze hard-boiled eggs as they will turn hard and rubbery.
