Basic Rice Crispy Treats in the Instant Pot

Cooking rice crispy treats in the Instant Pot saves you time, but it also feels like you’re cheating/cutting corners without losing any of the flavor or consistency. I’ve put together this basic recipe for rice crispy treats, but you can also use this as a guide as marshmallow fluff to add on top of any dessert recipe!

The Process

1. Add Marshmallows

Start by adding 1 cup of water to your inner pot. Next, insert your steamer basket or bowl (on a trivet) with a bag of marshmallows inside. Make sure you’re using the standard-size marshmallow, not the minis!

2. Pressure Cook

Pressure cook for 0 minutes then QUICK-RELEASE as soon as it’s finished. Waiting too long will make the marshmallows too hot!

3. Add Rice Krispie Cereal

Stir 7 cups of Rice Krispie cereal straight into the steamer basket or bowl and add the optional butter to taste if you’re using a bowl, (or transfer to a bowl and add butter if you’d like).

4. Pour into Dish

Pour the mixture into a casserole dish and press firmly with parchment paper to keep its shape. Refrigerate for an hour then cut into squares and enjoy!

FAQ

My Instant Pot can’t be set to 0 minutes, what should I do?

If your Instant Pot can only be set to 1 minute you can still use this recipe. Simply set it to 1 minute and as soon as the Instant Pot beeps letting you know it has come to pressure, turn it off and release the pressure.

I only have marshmallow minis, will this still work?

No! You have to use standard-sized marshmallows. The minis will get too hot and turn into liquid.

Why did you use a steamer basket?

I used a steamer basket because at the time of discovering this method I didn’t have a good size bowl to fit all the marshmallows inside the Instant Pot. It works great and only about a tsp of marshmallow is lost through the holes. Many Instant Pot owners have perfect-sized steamer baskets so this recipe can be used by anyone with either type of dish.

Why is butter optional?

Let’s be honest, butter makes everything better! I wanted to point out that it can be added after pressure cooking only if being mixed in a bowl, not the steamer basket. If only making marshmallow fluff, I wouldn’t add butter.
